My wife frequently beats me – Divorce-seeking husband tells court

Oluwatosin Bakare, an Ibadan-based businessman, on Wednesday told an Ile-Tuntun Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, to dissolve his seven-year-old union to his wife, Enitan, because she frequently beats him.

NAN reports that Bakare, who lives at Labo Owo, Dugbe area of Ibadan, cited frequent battery and threat to his life as reasons for his prayers for divorce.
“My refusal to make a thorough research before I eventually got married to Enitan is the reason behind my problem today.

“My lord, as soon as Enitan got into my house, she began to act strange. She challenges my authority on most issues.

“ I have made efforts to correct her misbehaviour by informing our pastor, but rather than turn a new leaf, Enitan’s attitude worsened, making the pastor’s intervention ineffective.

“In October 2018, Enitan, on entering our bedroom, gave me a deafening slap as she followed it up by bringing out a knife to stab me.

“I, however, managed to escape unhurt.
“I can’t count the number of times she had attacked and torn my clothes in the Church and at other public gatherings.
“Sometimes, if I leave the office late, Enitan would challenge me and even beat me on getting home.

“On Nov.16, 2018 Enitan attacked me with a chisel in the Church.
“I stopped reporting her to her parents because they were obviously not interested in what becomes of her.

“Since I married Enitan, seven years ago, she has not conceived. And evidently, there is no more love between Enitan and I, so do separate us,” he said.

The respondent, who, however, opposed the divorce, was unable to deny most of the allegations leveled against her.
Enitan, a Laboratory attendant, instead submitted that her spouse was the best man to be with.

“My lord, our pastor is the problem in my marriage to Oluwatosin.
“The pastor has convinced my husband to marry another woman from his Church.
“I noticed a change in my husband since I had a miscarriage. He refused to show any concern.

“He started coming home late and also stopped performing his roles as husband,” she said.
The President of the court, Chief Henry Agbaje, requested them to provide more evidence to substantiate their claims.
He adjourned the matter until April 4, and asked them to produce their relatives.

Don’t throw Nigeria into crisis, declare winner of elections – PDP charges INEC

The National Working Committee, NWC, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conclude the collation process for Rivers and Bauchi States.

The party noted that the losers can approach the Election Tribunal to seek redress.
Speaking during a solidarity visit to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Wednesday, PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus said it is illegal for anyone to stop an election midway.

He said, “I call on the INEC Chairman not to drag the country into crisis because of inconclusive elections. This manoeuvre is not good for the nation’s democracy.
“He should go ahead and conclude the process of elections in Rivers and Bauchi States. We should move ahead. Those aggrieved should approach the tribunal.”
The PDP National Chairman said that leadership of the party are with the Rivers State Governor.

“We are here to say that we stand with you. We have prayed with you in private and we are standing with you at this crucial and trying moment. We ask God almighty to ensure that you cross this red sea”, he said.
National Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Tsauri said that the military should concentrate on protecting the nation’s territorial integrity instead of getting involved in election matters.
He said that the negative involvement of the military in the Rivers State Governorship election is a threat to nation’s democracy.

“The military should protect the territorial integrity of Nigeria. They should not be involved in Electoral Matters.
“The involvement of the military in the Governorship election of Rivers State is an attempt to truncate the nation’s democracy “, he said.

He called on INEC , security agencies and the All Progressives Congress, APC, Federal Government to work within the law at all times.

The PDP National Secretary said INEC should do what is right regarding the Governorship and State Assembly elections in Rivers State by declaring the results.
He described Governor Wike as a pillar of the party, who worked for the PDP when it mattered most.

“We are here to identify with you. If we talk of PDP, Rivers State is the first to be mentioned and you are the pillar of the party. We are confident that justice will be done. God is with you and the people of Rivers State are with you “, he said.

What Church of Satan told Daddy Freeze about marriage vows

The Church of Satan has reacted to a statement made by Nigerian OAP Daddy Freeze, where he stated that marriage vows are satanic.

Daddy Freeze on Wednesday took to his Instagram handle to state that all vows are satanic, including the ones made on wedding day; adding that Christ said so himself.

He wrote: “For Christians, the scriptures say two became one. How can you become one with someone who can’t access your phone, email or bank details? HOW?
“Those pulpit gaslights have lied to you all your life, a great pity it is that you are living a lie and the consequence is your expulsion from God’s city read Rev22:15.

“Many of you are living separate lives while carrying a legal document to pronounce you a couple. That’s a huge joke on no one else but you.

“The fact that you got married in a religious shrine in front of a priest does not make you a married couple, as a matter of fact, you don’t need a priest or a church to get married.

“1 Peter2:5 says we are all priests, stop outsourcing your priestly role to a yahoo boy by hiring someone else to do your job, pronounce YOURSELF married, IT’S YOUR GOD GIVEN DUTY and it has NOTHING to do with the church.

“All vows are satanic, including marriage vows, Christ said so himself, when you see him, argue with him.
“Become one with your spouse today, or get a divorce, it’s as simple as that, stop leading another person into lust because of Godless religious traditions. ~FRZ”

But in a swift reaction, the Church of Satan took the to its verified Twitter handle to express disagreement with Daddy Freeze, saying they find his views contrary to their belief in Satan,

The church wrote: “Marriage is not for everyone, but Satanists can admit and take responsibility for their own positions.
“Sounds like Daddy Freeze is just trying to make excuses to get out of it (making marriage vows).

Galadima claims Buhari, APC begging Atiku to drop court case

Buba Galadima, a former ally of President Muhammadu Buhari, has claimed that President Muhammadu and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have paid some people to convince Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 23 elections, not to challenge the result in court.
Galadima stated this when he featured on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television on Wednesday.

“Records available to us show that our candidates had won this election and that is why we have gone to court.
“APC have insisted, demonstrated and sponsored some highly placed Nigerians, paid them handsomely to appeal to Atiku not to go to court.

“What is their business? Didn’t their candidate in 2003, 2007 and 2011 go to court to challenge results? Did he ever congratulate those that were declared to have won those elections?” he queried.
DAILY POST reports that Atiku has claimed that he defeated President Buhari by about 1.6million votes.

This was contained in the petition he filed before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja on Monday, to challenge Buhari’s victory.

Enugu experiences hike in prices of livestock as elections end

Prices of livestock increased in Enugu State following high demand due to ceremonies shifted during the postponed general elections in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN ) correspondent who conducted a market survey in Enugu on Wednesday reports that many ceremonies including burial and marriage rites were shifted due to change in election dates .

NAN recalls that the Presidential /National Assembly elections were shifted from Feb . 16 to Feb 23 while the Governorship / State Assembly elections were moved from March 2 to March 9 , 2019 .

The postponements affected a lot of social activities in and around the state .
NAN reports that a cow is sold for between N 100 , 000 and N280 , 000 depending on the size as against N80 , 000 to N 180 , 000 sold shortly after the yuletide in January and February.

Goats are sold for between N 12 , 000 and N35 , 000 depending on the size as against N8 , 000 and N 28 , 000 sold in February.
Mr Abdul Usam , a ram dealer said prices were high because of high demand due to the forthcoming Easter celebration and many others ceremonies fixed during the rescheduled elections .

Usam noted that people from the South East also held their ceremonies before the rainy season started .
He also attributed the increase in price to insecurity in the Northern part of the country which had affected the prices of livestock in the state .

According to him , I have been in livestock business for the past 20 years and observed that Igbo people prefer to fix ceremonies such as weddings , traditional marriages and funeral ceremonies among others from January to April.

“ The essence of organising ceremonies at the dry season is to ensure that rains do not obstruct their events, ’’ Usam said .
He noted that he did not joke with the season because he used to make a lot of sales .
Mr Amino Tarry , a cow dealer , said prices of cow were high because people were afraid of travelling to the North to buy livestock due to Boko Haram insurgency in the Northern region .

Tarry noted that the good thing with this season was that once you had goods you must sell because the demand was usually high at this period .

Mr Jude Egbe , a fowl dealer said that the prices increased due to the production could not meet the demands.
Egbe described fowl business as lucrative especially during weekends , because customers would be demanding for as many as 50 birds depending on the number of guests they were expecting in the ceremony .

Mrs Olivia Agbo , a customer, said that she bought some chickens at the rate of N2 , 200 and N2 , 500 depending on the size of the broiler .
“ Before now, I use to buy broiler at the rate of N1 , 500 and N1 , 800 depending on the size .
“ I believe that the cause of recent increment is due to high demand because of the forthcoming Easter celebration, ’’ Agbo said .

Amechi Moka told NAN that he travelled from Ibusa near Asaba , to the state capital to catch a glimpse of the players at the pitch only to be turned back by security operatives.

Moka said he would remain outside the main bowl of the stadium until the end of the training session to see the players enter their bus .
He however expressed enthusiasm to be at the stadium on Friday for AFCON qualifying match .

Another fan , Miss Favour Okoye, said it was not right for the fans to be denied access into the stadium to watch the Eagles’ training .

NAN reports that hundreds of football fans waited outside the stadium as only journalists were allowed just 20 minutes to watch the training session.

The board said in its weekly bulletin obtained by our correspondent on Monday that the items were prohibited during its examinations , warning that candidates who breached the directive would be disallowed from taking the UTME .

The board said , “ To ensure that our examinations meet best global practices, the board has prohibited the use of the following items during its exams . They are watches , pens or biros, mobile phones or similar electronic devices, spy reading glasses , calculators, hard disks or similar storage devices , books or any reading material , cameras , recorders and microphones.

“ Others are ear pieces , ink or pen readers , smart lenses , smart rings or jewellery, smart buttons, bluetooth devices , key holders , erasers and Automated Teller Machine cards. ”

It said , “The search for a reliable assessment model after the traumatic experiences with Paper and Pencil Test hitherto used by the board led to the adoption of the Computer - Based Test . Real Madrid contact Chelsea over Hazard move as Zidane returns

Real Madrid have made contact with Chelsea about a summer deal for Eden Hazard, the UK Telegraph reports.
The LaLiga club is already planning Zinedine Zidane’s first big transfer, after his return was confirmed on Monday.
It is believed Real made contact with Chelsea about Hazard, shortly before they announced Zidane would be their new head coach on Monday.
Hazard is a huge admirer of Zidane as a coach and named the French legend as his idol growing up.
Chelsea’s transfer ban could block Hazard from joining Real, as Chelsea would be unable to sign a replacement. However, the club is hopeful the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will overrule FIFA’s decision to snub a request to freeze the suspension during the appeal process.
The Blues value Hazard at £100million, even though his current deal expires next summer.
Zidane has reportedly been handed a £300m transfer kitty.

Lagos launches *6820# to report domestic abuse,

Pupils in Lagos State have been told not to hesitate to report sexual or domestic abuse happening to them or others.
Speaking at the 2019 Commonwealth Day celebration on Monday at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mrs. Olubunmi Adekanye, said the pupils should dial *6820# to report sexual violence against them or others.
Adekanye said: “Finally, let me remind you that you owe this nation and humanity responsibility to report violence against you or your friends and colleagues so that the government can help to rescue you from abusers. Building a connected commonwealth to my mind starts with ensuring that everyone young and old enjoys peace of the mind devoid of any form of torture.”
She added further in an interview that the helpline, which was recently launched, was being manned by experts in the ministry of justice and warned against its indiscriminate use.

“It has just been launched and once they receive calls, they take it seriously and would ask a lot of questions so people should not call it for fun,” she said.
The theme for the 2019 Commonwealth Day was “A connected Commonwealth” and pupils from the six education districts of the state competed through various performing art forms (drama, dance, poetry, choral, and fashion parade) for laurels at the event.
The overall prize went to Education District One represented by pupils of Oke Odo Senior High School, Ile-Epo, for its drama which portrayed how the countries in the commonwealth were disconnected because of lack of respect of each other’s culture, languages, or racism.

English Teacher of Oke Odo Senior High School, Ile-epo, Ms Adeola Adefemi, who prepared the pupils for the competition, said the aim of the drama was to solve the problems it highlighted.
“We looked at the theme and we felt there should be a problem we solve.
“Among the commonwealth countries, there is problem of racism, lack of respect for culture and language of others and we hope it would be corrected through this drama,” she said.
Precious Patrick, an SS3 pupil on the drama team, said she was delighted that her school won despite not displaying costumes as colourful as those of others.
“The drama was highly educative. I learnt we should have respect for one another’s culture, language, not negate people’s views and have regard for the rule of law.
“When I saw the costumes of other districts, I thought we could not win because our costumes were not so good but I am happy we won,” she said.

Education District Four came second with their Atilogu Dance, which featured a brief parade of other countries while Education District Three was third with their colourful fashion parade of the national attires of the various countries that make up the commonwealth.
Director, Co-curricular Services, Mrs Marion Babs-Akineyeye, said the Commonwealth Day competition was an avenue for the ministry to nurture various talents in the young ones.

Rivers: We are not happy that this

Several thousand people on Monday protested against the suspension of governorship elections in Nigeria’s volatile Rivers state following widespread disruption to the vote, as international monitors criticised violence at polling stations and called for electoral reform.

State elections took place on Saturday in 29 of Nigeria’s 36 states — two weeks after President Muhammadu Buhari was elected to a second term, in a poll denounced by his main rival as a sham.

In Rivers state, an oil-rich province in southern Nigeria held by the opposition, dozens of men in military fatigues encircled a vote counting centre in the state capital Port Harcourt, prompting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to halt the vote count on Sunday.
Nigeria’s military denied its soldiers were involved, blaming “political thugs” for impersonating the army to commit electoral crimes.

On Monday members of Buhari’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) marched with civil society groups in Port Harcourt calling for the state results to be announced.
“As a stakeholder in peace, we are not happy that this process was aborted mid-way,” protest organiser and APC member of Rivers state parliament Victoria Nyeche told AFP.

“If there are issues, the election tribunal is there to resolve them. What INEC has done is illegal and an invitation to crisis.”
The INEC stopped the count after citing violence at polling stations, the kidnapping of staff, and confiscation and destruction of results.
Regional elections are fiercely contested in Nigeria, where governors are powerful and influential figures, controlling state finances and responsible for key areas from education to health.

Rivers is particularly important because it is in the oil-rich Niger Delta region that accounts for much of the government’s revenue.
Although in power nationally, Buhari’s APC party is in opposition in Rivers and had no candidate in the governorship election because of irregularities in the primaries.
Police Slam Wike Over Allegation Of Plot To Kidnap Rivers REC
It had urged its supporters to back a candidate from the small African Action Congress (AAC) party.

The state is currently controlled by the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which also condemned the suspension of the vote count as a “barefaced assault… akin to a coup d’etat”.
“Army, police and INEC are working with APC to subvert the will of Rivers people,” said incumbent PDP governor Nyesom Wike.
AFP reporters in Port Harcourt said the atmosphere was tense, with soldiers manning roadblocks throughout the city, which has long been a flashpoint for political violence.

– Electoral reform call –
Situation Room, an umbrella group of more than 70 civil society organisations monitoring the vote, has called for an independent inquiry into the entire election nationwide.
It said Saturday’s vote, and the presidential and parliamentary polls of February 23, failed to meet the threshold for credible polls.
Dozens of people have been killed, including in Rivers, where it said since 2011 the “environment for elections feels like a war, disenfranchising citizens who want to participate”.
“This has gravely undermined governance and security in the state,” it added, calling for an end to the impunity enjoyed by those who orchestrate the unrest.

Buhari won the presidential elections last month by a majority of nearly four million votes. His defeated rival, Atiku Abubakar, of the PDP, is challenging the result in court.
Results are still coming in for governorship contests across the country, with the APC hoping to keep control in 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja.
Both the European Union and the joint International Republican Institute/National Democratic Institute mission highlighted low voter turn-out in both rounds of the election and violence.

“A heavy military presence and vote-buying in some locations, as well as irregularities in the vote counting and collation process served to undermine the integrity of the elections,” the IRI/NDI said in a statement.
The chief observer of the EU mission, Maria Arena, called the violence at the weekend “deeply troubling” and said some of its 73 monitors were blocked from collation centres, apparently by soldiers.
In Rivers, there was “no doubt that the electoral process… was severely compromised”, she told a news conference in the capital.
The EU’s preliminary assessment into the elections as a whole said “systemic failings and electoral security problems” indicated there was a “real need for serious reform” in Nigeria.
“We echo the view of leading civil society organisations that say there is an urgent need to restore faith in the electoral process,” it added.

How I would want to be remembered – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Monday in Daura declared that he would want to be remembered as a leader who kept his word that elections in Nigeria must be free, fair and credible.
Receiving Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State, who came to formally inform him of his election victory in last Saturday’s governorship poll, the president commended Nigerians who heeded to his pre-election appeals to cast their votes peacefully.
The president, who described last Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections across the country as largely successful, said:
‘‘I have maintained a position that elections must be free and fair and people have the right to make their choices and vote their consciences. I am happy they understood the message and did just that.
‘‘Power is a public trust that belongs to the people. Power is not by strength or wisdom but by Providence. Elected persons must be fair and just. This is the legacy I want to leave behind. A leader must be fair and just. All leaders should strive to do that.’’
Governor Masari, who was accompanied by officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Katsina State, thanked the president and the party for the support which led to his decisive victory on March 9.
The governor pledged to work for the good of the people of Katsina State, in line with the vision of the APC government at the centre.

Man Banned From Betting Shop For 'Winning Too Much'

A man claims he's been barred from his local bookies after 'winning too much'.

Retired Michael Bates, 74, says he netted just over £2,000 in a lucky 12-day winning streak, with 48 successes at Coral in Colchester in Essex, after coming up with a method to predict the winners of horse races. He says that his 'system' was based on some research he did, which found that 80 percent of races are won by horses with the numbers one to four.

But grandad Michael says that his good fortune has come at a price, claiming that the staff at the shop told him to leave and not come back.

He told the Mirror: "They should not be allowed to do this. It can't be right. It's not as if I'm a Las Vegas high roller.

"I was told I couldn't come in any more as I was winning too much.

"How can they invite you to bet then tell you to go away if you win? They only want customers who are losers."

He said, when asked, he left the shop without kicking up a fuss, but later called Coral's customer service team to find out why he had been banned.

In a recorded phone call, heard by the Sunday People, he was told that staff have the right to decline bets, for a number of reasons including that a customer has won too much.

Michael added: "I was shocked. I can't believe this is right."

Coral's PR director Simon Clare told the paper he would look into Michael's complaint as it wasn't the betting shop's policy to ban customers for repeatedly placing winning bets.

He said: "For a very small minority of customers that show themselves to be particularly shrewd with their betting strategy or who follow a pattern of betting that is likely to be unprofitable for a bookmaker we may ask that their bets are phoned through to our trading desk for authorisation.

"However even for this very small minority of customers, their bets would rarely be refused, but we may on occasions limit the stake that we will lay."

The Gambling Commission said there's no legal 'right to bet' and that bookies staff are free to reject any bet.

Michael says he is now using other betting shops in the local area and says his winning-streak is still going.

Firms identified insufficient power supply, high interest rate, unfavourable economic climate, financial problems, unfavourable political climate, unclear economic laws, insufficient demand and access to credit as major factors constraining business activity.

The respondent firms were made up of small, medium and large corporations covering both import-and export-oriented businesses.

At 22.1 index points, respondents expressed optimism on the overall confidence index (CI) on the macro economy in February 2019.

The businesses outlook for March 2019 showed greater confidence on the macro economy with 58.5 index points.

EPL: Pogba, two others blamed for Man United’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal

Liverpool legend, Graeme Souness, has blamed Manchester United midfielders, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Fred following the Red Devils’ 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.
Goals from Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Unai Emery’s men all three points against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Souness blamed Pogba, Matic and Fred for their lackluster performances against the Gunners.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness said: “United huffed and puffed for a lot of that game. It wasn’t the United we have seen in recent weeks.
“I think the largest reason, the biggest reason why they didn’t start well was their midfield.
“I think their midfield were way off the pace: [Nemanja] Matic, Fred, and Pogba. You would have enjoyed playing against their midfield today because they didn’t get near anyone.”

Lifestyle Habits To Curb Mouth Odour

Everyone , at one point or the other in life , has had to deal with bad breath. Unfortunately , if the smell does not improve after brushing , flossing, and rinsing the mouth with an alcohol -free mouthwash , it may be chronic .
Consistently having bad breath is not only off -putting but can morph into a health issue with life threatening consequences if left unchecked.

Bad breath, also called halitosis in medical terms , is the emanation of a foul smell or odour from the mouth cavity . This odour can originate in the mouth , throat or tonsils and can be acutely embarrassing to anyone . The condition which afflicts approximately 50 per cent of the world population is brought on by consistent unhealthy oral hygiene and lifestyle .
The oral odour is usually caused by a group of anaerobic, sulphur -producing bacteria that breed beneath the surface of the tongue and often in the throat and tonsil area . The term ‘ anaerobic’ literally means living without oxygen, and in fact , these bacteria do not require oxygen to live . They occur naturally in the oral environment and are essential because they assist in digestion by breaking down proteins into amino acids.

As these bacteria feast on proteins in the mouth , sulphur compounds are released from the back of the tongue and throat . The bacteria excrete waste as hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan , and other odorous and bad tasting compounds known as volatile sulphur compounds . As long as the anaerobic bacteria feed on proteins and excrete volatile sulphur compounds unchecked, your breath will become worse and worse .
The good news is that ; with a few simple adjustments to food , lifestyle and oral hygiene , anyone afflicted with chronic bad breath can breathe easy without fear of embarrassment.

Listed below are 11 simple and super easy self-care techniques to help minimise and eliminate bad breath.

1 . Prevention : This is always better and less expensive than cure , so develop and cultivate the right habits always .

2 . Proper oral care : Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day . Be sure to get a toothbrush with soft bristles ( as to not damage tooth enamel or gums) and also use fluoride toothpaste . Brushing and flossing helps to remove any food and plaque which can be used as a fuel source by the anaerobic, sulphur -producing bacteria that are at the root of this problem .

3 . Brush occasionally with baking soda: The bacteria that causes bad breath thrives in an acidic oral environment. Brushing your teeth with baking soda helps neutralise excess acid found in the oral cavity .

4 . Eat foods rich in fibre : High fibre foods help prevent halitosis . Avoid or reduce your intake of heavily processed foods that contain refined carbohydrates such as cookies , cakes , sweets and ice cream.

5 . Stimulate your salivary flow : Prevent dry mouth with chewing gum, lozenges , or mints that are sugar free .

6 . Never use alcohol based mouthwash : Some mouthwash or oral rinses are effective at preventing bad breath. However , you should never use alcohol based mouthwashes because the alcohol makes the mouth very dry , which will actually make the problem worse .

7 . Drink green and black tea: They contain polyphenols that help eliminate sulphur compounds and reduce oral bacteria .

8 . Avoid products with sodium lauryl sulphate or alcohol : Do not use any oral hygiene products that contain sodium lauryl sulphate or alcohol because the alcohol makes the mouth very dry , one of the most common causes of bad breath.

9 . Clean your mouth after eating meat , fish or dairy products : Practicing consistent and thorough oral hygiene is an effective prevention tool .

10 . Stop smoking : Studies have shown that smokers are at higher risk of developing periodontal disease and dry mouth . Furthermore , people who smoke may also engage in other habits that promote this condition such as dieting , drinking alcohol , and suffering from chronic anxiety conditions that require exacerbating prescription medications .

11 . Eliminate dairy products from your diet: Lactose intolerance can be an underlying cause of halitosis.

UNAIDS Encouraged By Possible Cure of HIV

UNAIDS is greatly encouraged by the news that a HIV -positive man has been functionally cured . The man was treated by specialists at University College London and Imperial College London for advanced Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2016 using stem cell transplants from a donor who carried a rare genetic mutation .
Researchers report that HIV has been undetectable in the man since he stopped taking antiretroviral medicine 18 months ago .
“ To find a cure for HIV is the ultimate dream ,” said Michel Sidibé , Executive Director of UNAIDS . “ Although this breakthrough is complicated and much more work is needed , it gives us great hope for the future that we could potentially end AIDS with science , through a vaccine or a cure . However , it also shows how far away we are from
that point and of the absolute importance of continuing to focus HIV prevention and treatment efforts.”
Stem cell transplants are highly complex , intensive and costly procedures with substantial side -effects and are not a viable way of treating large numbers of people living with HIV.
However , the results do offer a greater insight for researchers working on HIV cure strategies and highlight the continuing importance of investing in scientific research and innovation.
The result, reported at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Seattle , United States of America, is one of only two cases of reported functional cures for HIV . The first was the case of the Berlin patient , Timothy Ray Brown, who received similar treatment for cancer in 2007 .
There is currently no cure for HIV. UNAIDS is working to ensure that all people living with and affected by HIV have access to life - saving prevention , treatment , care and support services .
In 2017 , there were 36 . 9 million people living with HIV and 1 .8 million people became newly infected with the virus . In the same year , almost 1 million people died of AIDS -related illnesses and 21 . 7 million people had access to treatment .

Sterling’s hat-trick sends Manchester City four points clear

Raheem Sterling scored a second-half hat-trick, as Manchester City defeated Watford 3-1, to move four points clear in the title race.
Sterling’s first goal was initially ruled out for offside, but after a long discussion, referee Paul Tierney overturned his own decision.
The England winger made it 2-0 four minutes later, converting Riyad Mahrez’s low cross.
He then dinked the ball over Ben Foster to complete his hat-trick.
Substitute Gerard Deulofeu slotted the ball under Ederson from Troy Deeney’s flick-on, to grab a late consolation for the visitors.
Second-placed Liverpool will be hoping to make up ground, when they welcome Burnley on Sunday.

Habits that could hurt your relationship

Romance isn’t just about a box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day. A satisfying relationship can also make people feel happy and healthy. But keep in mind that successful relationships aren’t just about rainbows and butterflies-a healthy partnership requires communication, respect, and plenty of good habits from both people. So when dating that special someone, avoid stalking their ex on Facebook, keeping feelings bottled up, and splitting the double cheeseburger every night . These (and 17 other) bad habits could make a great relationship take a turn for the worse.
Trying to improve him/her: News flash: There’s no such thing as a perfect person, so don’t expect unrealistic changes. Reminding him or her to make the bed is one thing, but trying to radically change shyness or anxiety is another—and could be ignoring the underlying causes for those issues in the first place.

Finding faults with the fam: The ’rents may be harder to handle than your significant other. But even if there’s some clashing of heads, don’t focus on the family’s faults. Getting criticism from family members can make people feel depressed and hostile—which means some tense holiday dinners. Besides, the situation can’t be worse than what Gaylord went through.

Engaging in constant PDA: Getting it on in public can not only make bystanders uncomfortable, it may also compensate for a lack of real communication. Stick to hand-holding and quick kisses, and save the rest for the bedroom (or the cell phone?).
Fighting in public: As if PDA weren’t bad enough, arguing in public can embarrass the couple and make everyone around feel awkward, too. Talk it out in private, please.
Avoiding fighting: Love isn’t all good, all the time. Disagreements are bound to happen, and arguments can be a healthy part of a relationship. Never having conflict may make compromise impossible. Just don’t make fighting an all-day affair.

Not talking it out: If something is wrong, the other person probably can’t read your mind. When a problem comes up, speak up at the right time. One study suggests young couples are less stressed when they talk out their issues than when they keep their feelings bottled up. And don’t forget to say, “I love you.” Expressing emotions—positive and negative—can benefit that bond .
Forgetting to forgive: People make mistakes, and holding on to grudges may not only hurt a relationship—it could also cause unwanted stress and anxiety. Sympathy may be easier to give if we realize it will benefit our health .

Timing discussions badly: Conversations about important issues, like relationship expectations and financial blunders, all have their time and place. Don’t bring up serious topics when someone’s stressed, like at the end of the workday or right before hosting a party. Set up a time to talk when both people are relaxed.
Keeping score: Sure, relationships should be about give and take, but don’t keep track of every little detail (For example: I paid for the last six dinners, and you only paid for five!). It can cause unnecessary tension.
Being melodramatic: No relationship is perfect. So don’t create unnecessary drama in every scenario. If a mate forgets to take out the garbage, there’s no need for a scene. Take a few breaths and address the problem calmly.
Spying: When two people want to make it work, trust is key . Have confidence in your mate and respect their privacy: Don’t snoop through texts, emails, or bedroom drawers. (Definitely don’t use this!)
Allowing jealousy to take over: Doubting your partner may be a symptom of a larger problem: relationship insecurity. And women who feel insecure in their relationships may be at greater risk for health issues like a weakened immune system . Some advice for reducing envy, at least temporarily? Stay off Facebook and other social networking sites .
Letting go: Sometimes when partners feel too secure with each other, they end up putting on a few pounds, possibly because they’re less physically active. Try being a power couple to stay both happy and healthy.
Constantly comparing: Forget the ex and stop comparing a current partner with a person from the past. This could lead to unrealistic expectations.
Doing everything together: Everyone needs some alone time (yep, even hopelessly devoted couples). Solitude may even enhance relationships, making time together more valuable.
Lying: Little white lies can add up and ruin a relationship that should be built on honesty. There is wiggle room, of course: “Sweetie, that homemade dinner tasted great…”
Not being honest with yourself: Don’t just be honest with a companion. Stay real about what you need in order to stay satisfied. Is a long distance relationship really worth the work? Is it okay that they’re working all the time?
Lacking self-confidence: Not feeling confident in a relationship can really do some damage: Low self-esteem is sometimes linked to low sex drive, which could make things less heated in the bedroom. Getting active, setting goals, and even smiling can improve self-confidence. But don’t forget that an unhealthy relationship can actually cause low-self esteem, so steer clear of someone who makes you feel less than great.
Forgetting why you’re in it: Remember to ask yourself why you two are dating, and what you want out of it. Does a partner want to put a ring on it while you want to remain casual? Being with someone for the wrong reasons is one slippery slope!
Taking him or her for granted: Always remember why you love that special someone. Showing gratitude and paying attention to that good person by your side will only make the relationship stronger.

Gunshots as Desmond Elliot attacked in Lagos

Suspected hoodlums on Saturday shot sporadically as they attacked the vehicle of Desmond Elliot, a Lagos House of Assembly candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The incident happened at about 3:00 p.m. at Akerele junction in the Surulere part of the Lagos where Mr Elliot currently represents in the assembly.

The attack is said to have been perpetrated by street boys who wanted the famous actor to stop and give them money. But the lawmaker decided to keep going. His vehicle was attacked and the windshield broken.

Supporters of Mr Elliot at a nearby polling unit, PU20, Ward 7, Surulere, quickly called in reinforcement to rescue the lawmaker.

Immediately he was rescued, thugs shot sporadically into the air, creating an even more tense atmosphere.
In a quick response, however, police officers attached to the nearby polling unit called in armed reinforcement who arrived to calm the situation.

Ad-hoc staffers of the electoral commission, INEC, were advised by security personnel to conclude their vote counting early before the situation escalates.

Buhari, Atiku’s battle for Nigeria enters new phase

Ex-VP calls pressure on him to abandon legal challenge ‘ridiculous’
By Dirisu Yakubu
Barely one week after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared President Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the February 23 presidential election, his Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, counterpart, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday, made good his promise to legally challenge the outcome of the election.

Buhari and Atiku
Atiku, according to INEC, polled a total of 11, 262, 978 votes, 3, 928, 869 votes less than Buhari who garnered a total of 15, 191, 847 votes to clinch a fresh term of four years. But to Atiku and his party, the outcome of the exercise does not reflect the will of the vast majority of Nigerians, who, they claimed, voted against the ruling party.

In announcing his decision to challenge the election result, Atiku had eulogized the judiciary saying, “I am encouraged by the presence of fearless men and women of the bench. The judiciary which had in the past discharged itself ably is once again being called upon to deliver judgment on this matter that will be untainted by lucre and uncowed by the threat of immoral power.”

Early last week, Atiku and his legal team, led by Dr. Livy Uzoukwu, SAN, secured the nod of the Presidential Election Tribunal to inspect materials used for the exercise but had their request to subject ballot papers to forensic examination rejected. In a ruling by a three-man panel headed by Justice Abdul Aboki, the tribunal argued that audit of ballot papers used for election is outside the provision of the Electoral Act.

Atiku and the PDP, in deciding to head to the court, had premised their rejection of the poll’s outcome on a number of issues, even as they stated that they had in their custody the authentic result derived from polling units and voting points across the nation. So, what are these issues?

Military interference/violence

The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, insists that violence, which marred the presidential and National Assembly polls in some parts of the country, called into question the APC administration’s commitment to peaceful elections. According to him, the death of some Nigerians in the course of the elections was sufficient to dissuade many voters from coming out to exercise their franchise.

Although the military has explained its own side of the electoral violence, the PDP believed the events were preventable and avoidable.

The party also argued that the cancellation of more than 157, 000 votes in Nasarawa State was the making of the electoral umpire, acting in connivance with security agents to thin the ranks of PDP supporters, all in a bid to win the state for the ruling party.

Alleged connivance

The Wazirin Adamawa alleged that a systemic scheme designed by INEC to prune voting figures in PDP strongholds largely informed the outcome of the election. According to Atiku, card readers were compromised in some states of the federation, thus making it difficult for a good number of voters to get accredited for the exercise. For instance, the former Vice President argued that in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states with 3,215,271 and 2,119, 727 registered voters respectively, paltry 678, 167 and 695, 677 voters passed the accreditation hurdle eventually.

Although he won in the two oil-rich states, the margin of victory in Atiku’s reckoning would have been significantly higher had INEC carried out its duties thoroughly without recourse to partisanship.

The PDP presidential candidate wants INEC to explain why in war-torn Borno and Yobe states, voter turnout failed to mirror the security challenges on ground. Similarly, he argued that in its strongholds outside the South-South and South-East geo-political zones, the margin of victory he had over Buhari was questionably low.

Security agents

The major opposition party in the country also pointed to the role of security personnel in the elections. To the PDP, security agents, particularly the police, picked up some of its stalwarts ahead of the elections to prevent them from mobilizing support for Atiku.

While the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, insists that the picking up ordered on alleged financial crimes, the PDP and indeed Atiku believe it was orchestrated to punish those who continued to support the party’s quest for the highest elective office in the land.

Doctored figures

The figures recorded in favour of Buhari at the polls have also been faulted in many public outings by the PDP and its candidate. In Yobe and Borno states, for instance, the PDP says it is at a loss as to how a people ravaged by Boko Haram attacks could turn out the figures produced by INEC.

In Yobe, the ruling APC garnered a total of 497, 914 votes while the PDP got 50, 763 votes. The story was no different from neighboring Borno where Buhari polled an impressive 836, 496 votes, leaving Atiku with 71, 788 votes. Thus, an independent authentication of these figures, according to the party, would go a long way in determining the legitimacy or otherwise of Buhari’s tenancy of Aso Rock beyond May 29, 2019.

Why court is our only option – Atiku

As some eminent Nigerians, including royal fathers and a senior lawyer, continued to urge the PDP to accept the result of the elections by congratulating the President, Atiku says such a counsel is one he is not going to heed because going to court is the reasonable route to take.

Speaking exclusively to Sunday Vanguard on the issue, spokesman for the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organization, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said the refusal to permit a forensic audit of the ballot papers used for the elections would be appealed by the former Vice President at the appropriate time.

He said, “It is ridiculous to read very enlightened members of the bar advising Alhaji Atiku Abubakar not to seek legal redress. Why then do we have laws if they would not be subjected to test at the relevant courts of law? How do you advise a man not to take a civilized route to demand for justice where injustice has been seen to have been committed?

“The refusal to grant the order for forensic analysis will be appealed because, that is one scientific way to determine multiple voting and reckless thumb-printing that was perpetrated during the election. We will carry out the examination of other election materials to establish discrepancies which are so visible in the way that figures were concocted in certain areas.

We will pursue this case to a logical conclusion to strengthen the processes of election and electoral conduct so that powers-that-be would not just wake up and conjure figures to represent voting outcome. There were issues with card readers which formed the basis for the voting and we do not expect INEC to violate her own rules and regulations.

“If the card readers did not work as directed by INEC, what was the substitute? Is that valid in law? Please tell those advising our candidate not to go to court to keep their advice. We will test the validity of our laws as contained in relevant documents to ensure that they are not run in the breach whimsically without consequences.”

Laudable as the option taken by Atiku is, pundits are worried that the slow pace of justice in the land may render the pursuit of the option not only difficult but also frustrating for the man seeking redress from the judiciary.

For them, a life - threatening and complex stem cell transplant was a last - ditch attempt at survival. For most others, that is an unnecessarily dangerous and improbable option compared to taking a daily pill that suppresses their virus so that it is untransmittable , and allowing them to live a long and healthy life .
How a stem cell transplant cured the berlin patient and the London patient
The vast majority of humans carry the gene CCR 5 . In many ways, it is incredibly unhelpful .

It affects our odds of surviving and recovering from a stroke , according to recent research . And it is the main access point for HIV to overtake our immune systems .

But some people carry a mutations that prevents CCR5 from expressing itself , effectively blocking or eliminating the gene . Those few people in the world are called ‘ elite controllers ’ by HIV experts . They are naturally resistant to HIV.
If the virus ever entered their body , they would naturally ‘ control ’ the virus as if they were taking the virus -suppressing drugs that HIV patients require .
Both the Berlin patient and the London patient received stem cells donated from people with that crucial mutation.
The case , published online on Monday by the journal Nature , involved researchers at four United Kingdom ( U. K . ) universities : UCL , Imperial , Oxford and Cambridge . It will be presented on Tuesday at an HIV conference in Seattle.
The patient was diagnosed with HIV in 2003

. He started taking anti -retroviral therapy ( or , ART , which are virus - suppressing drugs) to control the infection in 2012 .
Ever since 1996 , when ART was discovered , it has been recommended as immediate treatment post-diagnosis .
The researchers do not elaborate on why the London patient went nine years before starting on ART.

He developed Hodgkin lymphoma that year . In 2016 , he agreed to a stem cell transplant to treat the cancer in 2016 .
As with any other patient in his rather unique situation, his doctors hoped they could strike the perfect balance : find a donor with HIV- resistant genes that could wipe out his cancer and virus in one fell swoop .

Most of us carry the gene CCR5 . It is very unhelpful in many ways. It hampers our ability to survive strokes and recover from them, according to recent research . It is also the gene that HIV targets and uses as its access point to enter the immune system .
A minority of people in the world carry a mutation of CCR5 , which prevents it from expressing, essentially blocking the gene altogether.

As a result , they are naturally resistant to HIV, earning them the name ‘ elite controllers ’ – because they naturally ‘ control ’ the virus as if they were on virus - suppressing medication .
As with the Berlin patient , the London patient ’ s doctors found a donor with a CCR5 mutation.

About one percent of people descended from northern Europeans have inherited the mutation from both parents and are immune to most HIV. The donor had this double copy of the mutation .
That was ‘ an improbable event , ’ said lead researcher Ravindra Gupta of University College London . ‘ That’ s why this has not been observed more frequently. ’
The transplant changed the London patient ’ s immune system , giving him the donor ’ s mutation and HIV resistance .
The patient voluntarily stopped taking HIV drugs to see if the virus would come back – something doctors do not typically recommend because it hasn ’ t worked since the Berlin patient .

What is more, the Berlin patient ’ s case was slightly different: he stopped taking his anti - retroviral therapy before his transplant. Out of caution , the London patient ’ s doctors kept him on his drugs throughout .
ART, taken daily , suppresses the virus to prevent a resurgence .
After six months of daily medication , patients’ viral loads are undetectable, and therefore untransmittable to anyone else.
A few weeks off ART and most patients see their viral load skyrocket . But that was not the case for the London patient .
Tests not only found no trace of R5 virus (the type associated with CCR5 ) , but also no trace of X4 virus , a type of HIV associated with another gene entirely . Eighteen months later without drugs, he remains HIV- free.

Meanwhile , the National Agency for the Control of AIDS ( NACA) joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2019 Zero Discrimination Day. NACA continued to advocate for the protection of Nigerians against HIV -related discrimination at all levels in the country.
Since 2014 , the Zero Discrimination Day has been commemorated annually on the 1 st of March . It is a global event that promotes diversity and recognizes that everyone counts .
In 2019 , the Joint United Nation programme on AIDS ( UNAIDS ) is highlighting the urgent need to take action against discriminatory laws .
As declared by the Executive Director of UNAIDS , Mr . Michel Sidibé back in 2017 – “ Stigma and discrimination is an affront to human rights and puts the lives of people living with HIV and key populations in danger . ”

Discrimination can be institutionalized through existing laws , policies and practices that negatively target people living with HIV and marginalized groups . Stigma and discrimination occur in different forms and may not necessarily be a deliberate or conscious action .
NACA emphasised the importance of creating public awareness on the country’ s 2014 national HIV and AIDS Anti- Discrimination Act .

Head, Public Relations and Protocol , NACA , Toyin Aderibigbe , said : “ The Act makes it an offence to discriminate on the basis of one ’ s real or perceived HIV status . It also prohibits any employer , individual or organization from requiring a person to take an HIV test as a precondition for employment or access to services . ’’
Aderigbigbe urged Nigerians to take advantage of the 2014 Anti -Discrimination Act to know their rights and protect themselves from all forms of HIV- related stigma and discrimination .
Legal protection against HIV- related discrimination is an essential prerequisite for an effective national HIV response . The lack of protective law enforcement and the existence of punitive laws can feed stigma and discrimination and hinder access to HIV services for people living with HIV.
Meanwhile , the UNAIDS is greatly encouraged by the news that an HIV-positive man has been functionally cured of HIV.
“ To find a cure for HIV is the ultimate dream, ” said Michel Sidibé , Executive Director of UNAIDS . “Although this breakthrough is complicated and much more work is needed , it gives us great hope for the future that we could potentially end AIDS with science , through a vaccine or a cure . However , it also shows how far away we are from that point and of the absolute importance of continuing to focus HIV prevention and treatment efforts. ”
